After two days in the Champions’ Play-offs, Antwerp has presented itself as the team to beat for the title. At the Bosuil, however, they do not want to make any statements in that direction. They want it, but also realize that the growth of the club is going at the speed of light.
Marc Overmars already let slip that Antwerp is not yet ready to play in the Champions League. “We may be more ready to become champions than to play Champions League,” says Sven Jaecques in HLN. “I do think that we can be the best in the series in Belgium, but I agree with Marc when he says that it is actually going much too fast.”
Antwerp has taken the Belgian top by storm and has even won the cup twice. “That’s actually absurd. When I started at Antwerp in 1B there was nothing. No stadium, no fields, no structure… Now it’s up to us to control that new situation with higher expectations.”
But the title is still not a must, they say. “No. We aim for the highest possible, but we don’t have to become champions at all. We don’t put that pressure on ourselves.”
