32,000 women dye Madrid pink against Breast Cancer in the XIX Women’s Race

More than 32,000 women have dyed the center of Madrid this Sunday in the XIX edition of the Central Dairy Asturian Women’s Race united against breast cancer and gender violence, in which all had the number 016 on the bib.

This has been transferred to Europa Press Television by the spokesperson for the race, Henar Calleja, who has highlighted that the Olympic badminton champion Carolina Marín has sponsored this tide. The race, starting from Serrano street (between Jorge Juan and Recoletos streets) and finishing at Paseo de Camoens, inside Parque del Oeste, has crossed places such as Puerta de Alcalá, Cibeles or Plaza León.

“We also pay tribute to Virginia Torrecilla and Clara Simal, soccer player and athlete, because we always want to give visibility to women’s sports and to all these great athletes that we have in our country,” Calleja remarked.

The route has been 7.2 kilometers, a “very good” distance for both running and walking “making Madrid a pink city” while breathing a “festive atmosphere with the desire to have a good time”.

The race was resolved in a sprint between the Serbian sisters Ivana and Sladjana Zagorac and the very young Silvia Rey Veiga. Rey attacked in the first kilometer and led the race until almost the end, when the Zagorac sisters gave chase. In the end, Ivana took the victory with a time of 24:07, followed by Sladjana and Silvia Rey, third, only three seconds behind them. Behind them, Teresa Urbina, fourth, and Sara Reimondo, fifth, crossed the finish line. The first mother to finish was Katherine Ortiz (25:58).

At the start, the largest pink ribbon in the history of Spain was displayed in an initiative of Banco Santander, 50 meters long, and carried by the ‘pink tide’ minutes before the start. Carolina Marín has been the godmother of this new edition and has given the start and participated in the tributes at the start together with Begoña Villacís, Mar de Vicente, from the General Directorate for Equality of the Community of Madrid; and the General Director of Sports of the Madrid City Council, Alicia Martín.

The test will make a final contribution to the Spanish Association Against Cancer of 75,000 euros. As a novelty, in the registration process the option of donating an extra amount directly to the Association has been given. Besides, support will continue to be given to three foundations focused on protecting women in different fields: Wanawake Woman, GEICAM Foundation and Clara Campoamor. Pulseras Rosas will also be present at the Runner’s Fair cutting pigtails and donating wigs to the most disadvantaged women.

The runners have also had the opportunity to acquire up to 100 100% solidarity bibs in favor of the Sandra Ibarra Foundation. Likewise, it is also possible to collaborate with the rest of the local projects of each city, and voluntary donations can be made in the same way to the other eight local projects in all types of registrations.

The Z Zurich Foundation continues its cooperation for yet another year with the Central Lechera Asturiana Women’s Race through Zurich Seguros, one of the sponsors of the circuit. In Madrid, she will contribute one euro for each woman who has crossed the finish line for the Sandra Ibarra Foundation.

Sport, fight, gender and research

The Women’s Race also helps to make visible the fight against gender violence. All the participants have worn the same bib number, 016, the telephone service number for victims of gender violence, and which leaves no trace on the phone bill. Among the priority objectives is the effort to incorporate women of all ages into the regular practice of sport, fight against cancer and raise awareness about the importance of prevention, as well as promote healthy lifestyle habits to avoid it as far as possible, and combat gender violence and social and educational inequalities suffered by women.
