Handball, state league relegation men: VfL Kamen – ETG Recklinghausen 28:36 (13:19). Second game for VfL in the relegation, first defeat. A damper for VfL in the fight for relegation. Against the physically robust guests, at least a head taller than almost all VfL players, the Nitsch squad fell behind early on and lost significantly in the end.
Only once in the first minute of the game did Kamen take a 1-0 lead through Maurice Schuster. Moritz Keck countered it again with a 2:2 (5th minute), but then Recklinghausen pulled away. Again and again the opponent’s long guys were able to overcome the Kamen defense with throws from the back and scored. VfL found no way to stop it. At half-time there was already a six-goal deficit on the scoreboard in the Koppelteich sports hall.
VfL was unable to make up for this deficit in the second half of the game. In addition to the weak defensive performance, there was also an inability to attack. Missed throws, playback and technical errors accumulated. Quickly check off this bad performance and regroup for the next game against HSG Spradow, who parted ways with HSG Hohenlimburg on Saturday at 24:24.
After two games, ETG Recklinghausen leads the table of the relegation round with 4:0 points. The rest of the order: HSG Spradow 3:1, VfL Kamen 2:2, HSG Hohenlimburg 1:3, Coesfeld 0:2 and TSV Oerlinghausen 0:2.
VfL coach Uwe Nitsch: What we played today wasn’t a defensive game. That was a pile of chickens. Up front we didn’t hit the goal or throw the goalkeeper off. 25 misses and at least as many technical mistakes, we made playback errors. You can’t win a game that way. Neither in the relegation nor in the district league. We didn’t get close enough to the opponent, we hardly had physical contact.
The following game next Sunday will take place at HSG Spradow (Ostwestfalen). There are just 150 kilometers to drive.
