The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has nominated the first 13 athletes for the Summer Games in Paris. The start will be made by athletes from the sports of athletics, fencing, surfing and taekwondo, as the DOSB announced on Tuesday.
Among those taking part are European marathon champion Richard Ringer and saber fencer Matyas Szabo, who became world champion in the team in 2014.
In addition to wrestlers, Laura Hottenrott, Melat Yisak Kejeta, Domenika Mayer, Samuel Fitwi Sibhatu and the German record holder Amanal Petros were nominated for the marathon competitions. Deborah Schöneborn and Hendrik Pfeiffer are available as replacements.
The first nominated Paris participants also include Anne Sauer (fencing), Camilla Kemp, Tim Elter (both surfing) and Lorena Brandl (taekwondo).
Four more rounds of nominations
The DOSB is planning four more nomination rounds in June and July, in which a total of hundreds of participants will be announced for the games from July 26th to August 11th.
“The DOSB expects a team strength of at least 400 athletes for the Olympic Games this summer,” it said. The large number of qualified teams in the game sports contributes to the size of the team.
At the Olympic Games in London 2012, the team included 407 athletes, four years later in Rio de Janeiro there were even 452. At the Games in Tokyo 2021 there were 434 athletes.
