Jule Niemeier failed in the first round of the WTA tournament in Stuttgart. She stood up to Wimbledon champion Jelena Rybakina for a long time.

Jule Niemeier was not able to take the momentum of success with the German tennis women on the tour. The 23-year-old hopeful from Dortmund lost in the first round in Stuttgart to Jelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan 5:7, 3:6.

For Niemeier, who had played in the foreground last year, her sixth WTA tournament in a row ended after her opening match.

Before her appearance in Swabia, Niemeier had gained self-confidence in the Billie Jean King Cup. In a 3-1 win against Brazil, the Wimbledon quarter-finalist defeated the favored Beatriz Haddad Maia, who would also have been her next opponent in Stuttgart, in an almost three-hour match. The duel at the clay court tournament is now Rybakina.

Tatjana Maria meets Garcia

From a German point of view, only Tatjana Maria from Bad Saulgau is represented in the tournament. The 35-year-old meets Caroline Garcia from France on Thursday. At times, Niemeier kept up well against Rybakina and led in the second set by a break. But then she lost the thread and could no longer endanger the favorite.
