For many women, the green sand of Charleston is the ideal introduction to the large Ash Square series. Accordingly, the WTA Tour 500 tournament is traditionally well staffed. In 2023, however, the organizers will have to do without the reigning Australian Open winner: Aryna Sabalenka withdrew her entry shortly before the start of the tournament due to an injury.

She injured herself during one of her matches in Miami, Sabalenka explained on Twitter, and now she needs a break to cure her ailments. In Miami, Sabalenka was somewhat surprisingly eliminated by Sorana Cirstea in the quarterfinals.

Incidentally, in the week after Charleston, Aryna Sabalenka is due to start at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. By then, the current Australian Open winner should have recovered, as should world number one Iga Swiatek, who was not at the start in Miami due to a rib injury.
