The 49th World Chess Championship began on Sunday with a large absentee. World champion Magnus Carlsen voluntarily decided not to compete and thus to defend his title. Instead, in Astana, Kazakhstan, the Russian Jan Nepomnyashchi and the Chinese Ding Liren will duel for the crown of the chess world. The first game ended in a draw.
