«Use a scalpel, not a baseball bat»

In the last few days there has been a lot of news about the changes that Formula One could introduce. Initially, Domenicali announced that he would like to abolish free practice in favor of more fast races, while news of the new Sprint Race format is arriving from Australia. Toto also spoke on these topics Wolffwho said priority should continue to grow the popularity of the Circus, although caution should be exercised.

“I think everyone we want the sport to develop and grow spectatorsbut we need to find common ground on which method is best”, the Mercedes Team Principal told Autosport. “I like qualifying and the grands prix, but we also have to be open to seeing the direction the sport is taking, and some Sprints have been fantastic. What Stefano decides is fine. but maybe he should use the knife, not a baseball bat to set things right… it has a more precise cut“.

“Some things need to be fixed”

According to the latest rumors, several Formula One teams would agree with the change of format for the Sprint Races, to be adopted already in Baku. If the proposal is approved, already from Baku we could see two qualifying sessions, with two separate races. However, during the April break many staff members are on vacation, and Pirelli would not be able to deliver the tires on time. So it’s more likely that we will see the change in Austria.

Regarding this topic, Toto Wolff said: Two qualifying sessions are not bad, but with the current format they are not sustainable. Pirelli doesn’t have enough tires and the engines would be used too much. In qualifying you have less chance of putting the car into the wall, but with two races there is more risk. Also, when there’s a back-to-back, maybe you can’t fix the car in time.”
