Eve’s Hair Animation Steals the Show in Stellar Blade: A Closer Look at the Controversial Feature

Stellar Blade recently launched and received rave reviews from gamers and critics alike. Although many focus on the appearance of Eve (the protagonist), there is one feature that surprisingly caught the eye of players – the hair animation.

The introduction reads really weird, but we’re not kidding because since Stellar Blade came out, several Reddit threads have popped up dealing with Eve’s hair and its animation.

Stellar Blade hair animation under the microscope

An April 24th thread praised Eve’s hair as the truly X-rated part of Stellar Blade and showed a video of her moving and jumping around with her hair moving accordingly. They float around and fall fantastically onto Eve’s model, although many in the thread disapproved of the animation, claiming it looks “unrealistic.” These players feel that the hair moves too slowly and looks like it’s floating, almost as if Eve was submerged in water, and the hair critics say the clipping problems are also significant.

The hair animations actually feel a little weightless and slow, although the developers have taken an artistic approach rather than a realistic one. Clipping, although present, appears to be minimal, as Eve’s hair generally falls well on her model and doesn’t show through as much as we’ve seen in other games. “I would have hoped we could get realistic hair in this day and age, but I guess hair is still so damn hard to animate,” another player wrote, criticizing the weightlessness.

Eve’s hair delayed development by a year!

Stellar Blade director Hyun-Tae Kim claimed in an interview that Eve’s hair likely added about a year to the game’s development. Even in a much older thread from when the Stellar Blade demo was just getting started, Eve’s hair animations were called “underrated” and one user even said they looked “outstanding.”

Stellar Blade continues to receive overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and gamers, although it has caused some controversy and division within the gaming community. The hack ‘n’ slash is exclusive to Sony’s PlayStation 5, and here’s hoping the Japanese publisher continues its practice of PC ports and brings the game into Gaben’s realm.
