Burak Yilmaz posted a remarkable message on social media on Sunday evening. The Turkish striker suggests that he is leaving Fortuna Sittard despite a current contract. The Limburg club itself knows nothing.
“Dear Fortuna Sittard family and fans. It was a huge honor to play for you,” writes Yilmaz, who played for ninety minutes against FC Groningen (3-1 win) a few hours before. The message may be an emotional response to the whistle-blowing of him by some of the fans.
Yilmaz’s message comes quite out of the blue. The 77-time Turkish international signed a five-year contract last summer, including two seasons as a player. This Eredivisie season, he was already a basic player 23 times and is the club’s top scorer with nine goals.
The club itself is also not yet aware of a possible departure of the Turkish star. “We are also surprised by the message,” a Fortuna spokesperson said. “We are trying to make contact, but for now it remains silent on his part. It is now mainly speculation.”

Yilmaz is a legend in Turkish football
In the summer of last year, Yilmaz surprisingly opted for an adventure at Fortuna Sittard, which is in Turkish hands. The striker emphasized at the time that he thought it was especially important that Fortuna has a plan for him in the longer term and that he could possibly make his first meters as a trainer in Fortuna.
In Turkey, Yilmaz is regarded as one of the best football players of all time. He played 77 international matches and was accurate 31 times. He made three of them in 2021 in the World Cup qualifier against the Orange, which Turkey won 4-2. In addition, he played for top clubs such as Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray.
Yilmaz normally has seven games to play with Fortuna this season. Time will tell whether this message has consequences for the presence of the striker in those duels. The Fortuna of trainer Julio Velázquez is in a good eleventh place in the Eredivisie.
