Real Madrid, Thibaut Courtois and the Champions League. It’s a golden combination. On Tuesday evening on the field of Chelsea, the Belgian number one again kept his nets clean. During the first half, he made a spectacular save on an attempt by Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella, who failed to score from a few yards. Courtois threw himself at the ball and knocked it out of goal with his right hand.

“It was a good save”, Courtois laughed after the match. “It was a low cross and then you wait to see if someone tries to score at the near post or in the centre. I think I was half on the ground then, jumped up quickly and suddenly saw Cucurella on the ball. I thought to make myself as big as possible and jump, protecting the pole with my legs and the rest with my hands and body. That I celebrated like I’d scored? Yes, we are all passionate. It was also just before the break, which made the rescue even more important.”
Courtois also made himself noticed by kissing the Real emblem in front of the Chelsea fans. A little more oil on the fire after the boos. “It’s okay,” said Courtois. “I’ve had four great years here, so it’s all a bit sad. I owe Chelsea a lot, but it’s been five years now. If it continues and they don’t change their behavior, then of course I won’t do that either.
