The Girona women’s junior team defeats Mataró and qualifies for the Catalan final (58-48)

Básquet Girona will play tomorrow (12:00 p.m.) the final of Catalonia for Women’s Junior Preferent against Sant Adrià. Daniel Vives’ team won by 58 to 48 at Mataró in the second semi-final of the final stages that are being played at the Sports Pavilion in Salt. The victory also certifies the presence of the Girona girls in the Spanish Championships to be held in Andalusia from April 30 to May 6.

The importance of the appointment and the great atmosphere in the stands has taken its toll in the first few matches of both teams. In a first quarter with nerves, erratic and stuck, it took more than three minutes for the Girona players to get a basket in the game. The reaction was good with an 8-0 run that allowed them to open the first hole in the duel (14-4) with two consecutive triples by Laia Baus and Celia Nevado. The coach from Maresme has been forced to stop the match due to the uncertainty and the lack of defensive control of his team.

El Mataró, with a disastrous start from the triple (0/6), tied the game again at the end of the second quarter with a triple shot by Aina Cantos and a penetration by Nina Padrosa (19-19). Daniel Vives’ girls have not quite found offensive regularity, despite being able to leave with a margin of eight points at the break (30-22). The unionists have managed to control the top scorer of the league and Basketball Girona, a Claudia Acín with 4 points at the break. Lucia Pérez was the leading scorer in the half with 8 points.

The passage through the changing rooms has gone well at Básquet Girona. More calm and refined, the Girona girls have obtained the maximum advantage with a partial score of 11 to 2 (41-24). Despite some attempts to cut distances from Màrius Ferré’s team, the distance remained over ten points throughout the third period (44-30).

El Mataró has fine-tuned his aim and increased the defensive intensity in the last ten minutes. In fact, they were only four points behind with a triple miss (44-37). The blunder from the free kick has largely doomed the visitors’ options. The second chances for Básquet Girona have allowed them to scratch a few points to maintain the advantage, but the nervousness has reappeared in the final stretch of the duel. Acín then appeared to distribute two assists, one of them for a triple key by Emma Walters to calm the spirits. The ball has burned on both sides of the court, with a lack of aim and turnovers. The income achieved has allowed Básquet Girona to end up winning a lively and intense match by 58 to 48.
