A total of 59 crews from 7 autonomous communities dispute the Spanish Championship of the 420 class this Holy Week in the bay of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Among the participants are three medalists from the 2022 World Cup and the U17 champions of the 2021 edition.

The Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria organizes the regatta by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, in collaboration with the Spanish Association of the International 420 Class, the Royal Canarian Sailing Federation and with the sponsorship of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the City Council from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

After the celebration today Tuesday and tomorrow Wednesday of the days of registration and measurement of the teams, the boats will go out into the water on Thursday to start the regatta that will last until Sunday. 12 tests have been scheduled, at a rate of three per day.

The strong winds that prevail today in the bay of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will soften as the days go by, starting on Thursday with a forecast of 15/18 knots of intensity that will gradually decrease as the end approaches. of week.

They appear on the entry list and a priori the favorites to finish in good positions are the Balearic Islands María Perelló and Marta Cardona – runners-up in the world in 2022-; Miguel Ángel Morales and Alejandro Martín from the Canary Islands -sub-17 world runner-up in 2022- the Catalans Sebastián Riquelme and Miguel Pérez -absolute world runner-up in 2022-, and Ian Walker from the Balearic Islands, who was bronze in the same World Cup event and who sails in Gran Canaria with Fernando Barcelo.

In addition to Morales and Martín, in the local team you have to watch out for Jaime Ayarza and Mariano Hernández, European sub 17 champions in 2021, and the sisters Paula and Isabel Laiseca, current 29er world champions and sixth in the 2022 420 world championship. .

Along with the Cup, the Spanish Championship is a qualifying regatta to select the sailors who will represent Spain in the 2023 World Cup and the European Championship. In Gran Canaria the absolute categories, under 19 and under 17 – male and female in all cases-, in addition to the title of Champion of Spain by Autonomies.

The Canary Islands is the autonomous community with the most representatives (18 boats), followed by Catalonia (12), Galicia (8), Andalusia (6), the Balearic Islands (6) and Cantabria, which brings 5 ​​boats. There is also a Brazilian boat that competes in the open category.
