The superstar of the vice world champion suffered a back injury in the last friendly before the Copa America and had to be taken to the hospital in San Juan. The diagnosis after an MRI: contusion in the lumbar region and the lower three ribs on the left side and the soft tissue in the chest. Messi needs to undergo further medical treatments, according to the federation.
“Concerns about Messi,” wrote the newspaper “La Nacion”. “Olé” already reported the “Messi alarm”. It was initially unclear to what extent Messi’s participation in the Copa from June 3rd to 26th could be endangered. “He received a severe blow in the lumbar region,” said coach Gerardo Martino.
It happened in the 58th minute in Argentina’s own half. Messi was slightly pushed and fell, hitting the Albiceleste captain with his knee by another opposing player. With a goal by Gonzaolo Higuaín to make it 1-0 (1-0) in the 31st minute, the Argentines were already leading at the Estadio Bicentenario in San Juan when Messi was eliminated.
“Hopefully it’s nothing serious,” said goal scorer Higuaín immediately after the final whistle: “That would be very important for us, let’s wait and see.” It was very painful, however, coach Martino described Messi’s injury. “We are worried.”
Argentina face holders Chile in their first game on 6 June. The game in Santa Clara, California, is a replay of last year’s South American Championship final when Argentina lost 4-1 on penalties. To mark the 100th anniversary of the US association, the tournament will this time be played in the USA with guest teams from North, Central America and the Caribbean.
