BOSTON — Hunter Renfroe hit a three-run home run in the first inning as Los Angeles held off the Boston Red Sox 5-4 in the annual Patriots Day game that had an abbreviated start by star Shohei Ohtani because of a lengthy rain delay on Monday.
Renfroe drove in four runs as the Angels avoid being swept in the four-game series.
Ohtani allowed one run while pitching in two hitless innings, walking leadoff and two wild pitches before the RBI groundout from Rob Refsnyder.
The Japanese has allowed just two runs in 21 innings over four starts this season.
Renfroe, who hit 31 home runs for the Red Sox in 2021, disappeared a sinker 95.6 miles from Brian Bello (0-1) in the back row of the Green Monster stands during a four-run run in the first. Brandon Drury added a sacrifice fly in the inning.
