RTL shows NFL: That’s how it goes with Esume, “Icke” and Werner football experts

RTL has secured the NFL TV rights for the next five years and caused a sensation on the German television market. The Cologne-based private broadcaster will thus replace “Platzhirsch” ProSiebenSat.1 in football broadcasts on free TV from the 2023/24 season.

In the coming season, RTL and NITRO will broadcast up to three live games a week and one additional game exclusively on RTL+. Overall, RTL will show up to 80 games per season live due to its extensive rights package for the American football league NFL.

RTL shows NFL: How’s Esume, “Icke” and Werner doing?

Many football fans are now wondering how “Coach” Patrick Esume, “Icke” Dommisch and the other #ranNFL experts will continue. Are they all moving to RTL with the football rights or are some staying with ProSieben and ProSieben Maxx expanding their future ELF coverage?

With the European League of Football (ELF), the ProSiebenSat.1 broadcasting group wants to compensate for the NFL’s lack of TV rights. After all, Sat.1 and ProSieben have earned an excellent reputation among German football fans. In 2012, Sat.1 broadcast the Super Bowl live for the first time.

RTL secures NFL rights for the next five years

From 2015, the regular NFL season was broadcast on free TV, professionally set up by “Coach” Patrick Esume, Christoph “Icke” Dommisch, Jan Stecker, Volker Schenk, Björn Werner and other experts and extremely well known under the #ranNFL brand have been done.

Anyone who wanted to watch football in Germany only knew one address and these names. Although RTL has not officially announced any commentators, moderators and experts for the broadcasts for the 2023/24 season, names like “Coach” Esume and Björn Werner are already making the rounds.

RTL boss: “Fans can look forward to first-class reporting”

“All fans can look forward to first-class reporting, with the best football experts both behind and in front of the camera,” explained RTL News Managing Director Stephan Schmitter. Conversely, this could mean that RTL is already negotiating with some #ranNFL experts in the background.

“Coach” Esume would be the perfect RTL cast. A double function at RTL and ProSiebenSat.1 would also be conceivable. Esume could analyze the most important NFL games on RTL and the games of the ELF on ProSieben and ProSieben Maxx, of which the Hamburger has been a co-founder and commissioner since 2020.

Esume probably ended his TV career first

However, the “coach” should not be an option for the RTL project. Shortly after the Super Bowl, Esume posted an Instagram video declaring, “TV career is over but never mind, see you in the European League of Football.” A final farewell? A day later, Esume reiterated his statement on the “Football Bromance” podcast. “This statement from yesterday is actually the case. The topic is over,” says Esume, who is “completely happy” that he will no longer be on television in the future.

However, Esume did not rule out one scenario. “Can I come out of retirement? Can I be persuaded to keep doing this? Yes.”

“Icke”, connector and Werner: What’s next?

In addition to “Coach” Esume, “Icke” Dommisch and ex-footballer Stecker are particularly popular with the fans. Thus, a change from “Icke” and connector to RTL would make sense. There is also ex-NFL professional Werner, who would also be suitable for the new football format on RTL.

In the “Football Bromance” podcast, Werner clearly admitted the day after the Super Bowl: “There are negotiations with RTL.” Both he and Esume are in those negotiations. “As of now we have nothing on TV,” said Werner. The podcast will continue to exist.

At the end of March, RTL announced that both Stecker and Vollmer were part of the new RTL crew. Both will comment and analyze the 2023 NFL draft live from Kansas City along with Markus Kuhn and Alex von Kuczkowski.

After the RTL coup: what will happen to Motzkus, Spengemann and Schenk?

However, it is unclear how things will continue with Roman Motzkus, Volker Schenk and Carsten Spengemann. According to Sports Illustrated information, one of these three well-known football experts has not yet received a request from RTL. He will probably stay with ProSiebenSat.1.

New RTL job? Spengemann does not have a permanent contract with ProSiebenSat.1

Just like moderator Max Zielke, who as a local reporter and moderator is one of the most well-known faces of ran. In addition to “Coach” Esume, “Icke” Dommisch and ex-professional Werner, Spengemann could also have good chances because he does not have a permanent contract with ProSiebenSat.1.

At the German TV Awards, his PR consultant already hinted at where the journey could go. “Next year is where things really get going,” he said. Spengemann also posted a photo of himself and an RTL microphone in his hand on Instagram.

Football commentator Spengemann talks about the future

“I use a football expression: I’ll finish the season first and give it my all before making a decision. In any case, I’ll be a free agent from Monday, to stay with the terminology,” Spengemann explained in one Interview with the “Augsburger Allgemeine”.

“In the beginning there was the feeling: American football is hype. But that’s not it. Football came to Germany to stay,” said Spengemann, who has been commenting on football games since 2017. “American football has taken second place behind soccer in Germany, and that’s where the sport belongs.”

Are Buschmann and “Schmiso” already negotiating with RTL?

According to rumors from the network, Buschmann and “Schmiso” are said to be already negotiating with RTL. The Cologne-based private broadcaster would therefore have an absolute trump card and would not take over the ranNFL team from ProSiebenSat.1 one-to-one. There is no official confirmation.

RTL presents the first part of the new NFL crew in March

After the TV rights for RTL were announced, the #ranNFL editorial team said: “We are proud to have told the most successful TV sports story of the past decades with #ranNFL and the support of a loyal, committed and constantly growing football community.”

RTL is now continuing this story – with some well-known faces from #ranNFL, who fueled the football boom in Germany. At the end of March, RTL announced that Jan Stecker, Sebastian Vollmer, Markus Kuhn and Alex von Kuczkowski were commenting on the 2023 NFL draft for the Cologne-based private broadcaster.
