Playoffs missed, planning underway – SWR Sport

The Trier basketball players are playing their worst season since they were relegated to the Bundesliga in 2015. The goal of the playoffs was missed, and plans are now being made for the coming season.

After the 69:89 defeat against Medipolis SC Jena, it is clear that the Gladiators Trier will miss the playoffs of the second basketball league (ProA) this season. Trier is 13th in the table with 15 wins and 17 losses. Eighth place, which entitles them to play in the playoffs, can no longer be reached two games before the end of the regular season. Missing the playoffs also means that a return to the Bundesliga is no longer possible this year. The 2023/2024 season will be the ninth second division season in a row for the Moselstadt team.

The promotion to the BBL is the medium-term goal

Then the gladiators want to attack again. Andre Ewertz, managing director of the Gladiators Trier, told SWR Sport that reaching the playoffs is the Trier team’s goal for the coming season. In the medium term, even promotion to the Bundesliga must be targeted again. In order for these goals to be achieved, the managing director is already working on the planning for the coming season.

First, Ewertz has to clarify the coaching question. Jermaine Bucknor, who took over for Pascal Henrichs in March, is only planned as an interim coach until the end of the season. The future of the former Trier player and assistant coach is open. Squad planning will also largely depend on the coach. After a major upheaval last year, a further reorganization of the team this summer cannot be ruled out.
