Davy Klaassen was not hit by a lighter, but a battery last week. Both Johan Derksen and René van der Gijp will adjust that on Monday Inside today. Derksen is surprised about why ‘the lighter incident’ is still alive in the media and suspects that this is intentional. “One way or another it shouldn’t be publicized.”

During the semi-cup final between Feyenoord and Ajax, Klaassen was hit by an object from the audience. The police also did not go further than calling it an ‘object’, but the term ‘lighter incident’ soon started to live in the media. Van der Gijp notes on Monday that it was a battery that was thrown and Derksen confirms that. “Yes, it was a battery, yes. I thought it was a very large lighter,” said the 74-year-old analyst.

Presenter Wilfred Genee reacts stunned. “Are you sure?” he asks several times. “Yes,” replies Derksen. “But somehow that shouldn’t be publicized.”
Mike Verweij already planted the seed for the doubts on Friday. Ajax’s club watcher said in the podcast on Friday Kick-off that there were ‘great doubts’ among the team from Amsterdam about what had actually been thrown onto the field.

Van der Gijp finds it more understandable that Klaassen sees himself changing if it was a battery instead of a lighter. “If you get hit by a big battery, I can understand that you suffer,” he says. Derksen said on Friday, with the earlier information, that the fuss around Klaassen was somewhat exaggerated. “I have been in football for fifty years and they have always thrown lighters. And a new generation of supporters was singing ‘Jews on the gas’ before the game. That was not discussed further,” he said.
