Jonas Vingegaard gives his leader’s jersey a little more shine with second stage victory | Tour of the Basque Country 2023

Jonas Vingegaard has seized his second stage victory in this Tour of the Basque Country. The Tour winner was the strongest in a sprint-à-deux with Mikel Landa and also strengthens his leading position thanks to the bonuses.

After his victory yesterday, Jonas Vingegaard rode around for the first time today in his coveted leader’s jersey. But with a bonus of just 5 seconds on Mikel Landa, the Ronde was far from decided.

A first challenge followed today, where the peloton again had to deal with a cartload of Basque climbs.

After a tentative start with a series of escape attempts, a group of five riders finally got the blessing of the peloton.

Our country was represented with climber Harm Vanhoucke and Barrenetxea – the Basque leader in the King of the Mountains classification – also joined the adventure.

The latter had a successful day. After a day in the breakaway he was able to extend his lead in the secondary classification.

Vingegaard is lord and master

On the La Asturiana, the final climb where the escapees were caught, the classification riders came to mingle.

An isolated Vingegaard was soon put under pressure by Education First. After shots from Carapaz, Higuita and Uran, the Dane decided to go through himself.

Nobody could follow the yellow jersey and Vingegaard immediately made a nice difference. Landa, second in the standings, was the only one who could attach his cart with some difficulty.

The duo rode together to the finish and could compete for the stage victory. There Vingegaard again proved to be the fastest of the two in a sprint.

After Vingegaard was able to collect some bonus seconds in an intermediate sprint, he is even more ahead of his apparently biggest competitor thanks to this victory.

Vingegaard: “I felt good so I went myself”

Jonas Vingegaard: “I felt good on the final climb and I thought: why not go myself? Landa came to me, after which we worked well together. Fortunately I was able to win the sprint. I am very happy with that. Tomorrow is another one tricky stage. Then everyone will try to attack me again.”
