Hertha BSC: This savings plan affects the members of the capital club Sports

Hertha fights for survival – sporty and economical it’s now about the sausage!

In the Bundesliga is the situation before the first Relegation final at tail light Schalke on Friday (8.30 p.m., DAZN) more than dangerous. The Berliners are penultimate, the saving bank is four points away.

At least as frightening are the numbers in the books of Hertha boss Thomas Herrich (58).

As recently as December, President Kay Bernstein (42) said: “This and the following season are fully financed. But we have to tighten our belts.”

Managing Director Herrich is now making it clear how great the need really is. In SPORT BILD, the finance boss sounds the mega-alarm: “We have to turn over every cent that we spend.” And to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” he said: “Hertha is in need of restructuring.”

The timing of these statements, which may deter potential financiers, comes as a surprise – two days before the existence endgame and ten months after Herrich and Bernstein took over Hertha.

At the time, on June 30, 2022, Hertha had equity of EUR 29.5 million. Apart from transfers, there had not been any major austerity measures since then. But now it’s all the thicker.

The fact is: In the current season, the club expects a loss of more than 60 million euros, plus liabilities that recently amounted to almost 90 million euros.

In cooperation with new investor 777, the club laid down a tough austerity course. Hertha wants and should be in the black again by 2026 and is now pushing the pace all the more.

Herrich: “We have to restructure and refurbish ourselves. To do this, we look at what costs are really necessary and what we can still afford.”

A plan fits in with this, which the members will not like – but makes it clear how great the economic hardship really is.

According to BILD information, the club leadership is discussing giving up free food coupons at the two general meetings per year and letting the loyal fans pay for the catering themselves. A five-digit amount is to be saved for cakes, potato salad and wieners. Hertha is literally about the sausage!

The consideration fits the hard course of Berlin. Herrich had recently announced layoffs (BILD reported). Personnel costs – most recently around EUR 100 million – are to be reduced by a third. Herrich: “We’re trying to keep it as minimal as possible, but unfortunately it won’t work without job cuts.”

And one thing is clear: a relegation would exacerbate Hertha’s financial distress!
