If it weren’t for Jarome Iginla, the search for a new general manager would be very short-lived at the Calgary Flames.
In an interview with the Sportsnet network, the former glory of the Alberta team praised the candidacy of his former teammate Craig Conroy. The latter currently works as an assistant to the GM with the Flames.
“We are very good friends and I have to say that,” Iginla first said.
“He is passionate about hockey and the Calgary Flames,” he continued. I texted him the other day and he’s still busy. At the moment, he is in Switzerland for the Under-18 World Championship. A month ago he was in Penticton recruiting. I think he would do a great job.”
The Flames have been looking for a general manager for just over a week. The organization decided to end its association with Brad Treliving, and Don Maloney was named CEO on an interim basis. It is the latter who will oversee the hiring of the new decision-maker.
Still according to Iginla, it is Conroy’s human qualities that would make him a good GM.
“He is a guy who is good in relationships. I never heard anyone say anything bad about him. In this type of work, relationships are essential.
“He’s a great competitor,” added Iginla. He played 1000 games and he was a very smart hockey player. I’m excited. I really hope he gets the job. I think he would do a great job. He loves Calgary.”
Drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1990, Conroy briefly wore the colors of Sainte-Flanelle before playing for the St. Louis Blues, Flames and Los Angeles Kings. The 51-year-old former forward has 182 goals and 360 assists for 542 points in 1,009 career National League games.
