Game 13: Another draw at the World Chess Championship – tie-break is approaching

Status: 04/27/2023 3:43 p.m

The two grandmasters Ding Liren and Jan Nepomniachtchi go into the final weekend of the World Chess Championship in Astana/Kazakhstan with the same number of points after another draw. After the 13th duel, the score between the Chinese and his Russian opponent is 6.5:6.5, and 7.5 points are required for overall victory. There is a rest day on Friday.

This means that the number two and three in the world will go into the 14th and perhaps decisive duel on Saturday (from 11:00 a.m./CEST). If this game ends in a draw again, the successor to the Norwegian series world champion Magnus Carlsen, who did not appear to defend his title again due to motivation problems, will be determined in a tie-break on Sunday.

Ding, who had equalized the day before, took the initiative early on with Black. But his opponent improved and was even slightly ahead in the final sprint. However, because there was no concrete way of winning in sight, the grandmasters finally agreed on the draw with a symbolic handshake.
