Tour of the Basque Country: Stage 1
end
The Tour of the Basque Country has its first boss: Ethan Hayter. The fast man of Ineos still had the most gunpowder in his legs in the difficult last straight line. Hayter took advantage of an impressive lead-out from his teammate Omar Fraile to blow Mauro Schmid and Jon Aberasturi off his wheel.
Beforehand, this was seen as the biggest, and perhaps only, chance for the sprinters. Indeed, the short stage between Vitoria-Gasteiz and Labastida only had 1 2nd category climb, more than 100 km from the end.
Before that climb, the flight of the day arose, a trio of Spaniards took to the hare. But Juarisiti, Barrenetxea and Rodriguez were a bird for the cat, they were already caught with 30 km from the end.
10 km further, after a short climb, there was another intermediate sprint, where bonus seconds could be earned. The GC men actually got involved in the battle. Jonas Vingegaard was brought perfectly by his team, but had to lose out to Daniel Felipe Martinez. Marc Soler gathered the last second.
The final was still treacherous, because it was always up and down in the final kilometers, but the peloton had set its sights on a sprint. Burgaudeau tried with a late lunge under the rag, but without success.
In the final kilometer Ethan Hayter was perfectly piloted by teammate Fraile. The Briton started the sprint in pole position and he did not relinquish it.
The Brit won with force majeure and was a bicycle length ahead of Mauro Schmid and Jon Aberasturi, who completed the podium.
Hayter is of course also the first leader in the Tour of the Basque Country, tomorrow a first mountain stage is on the program.
