Dirk Nowitzki: “One of the most uncomfortable moments of my career.” – US-SPORT NBA BASKETBALL

Huch.

Dirk Nowitzki (44) is the best German basketball player. He led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA title in 2011 and was named Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP). Four years after he previously received that trophy for the regular season. At the time, however, he didn’t want her at all!

What was happening? In 2007, the Mavericks won 67 regular-time games with Nowitzki. In the playoffs, however, it was over very quickly. The Mavs lost 4-2 to the Golden State Warriors, eliminated in round one. The previously so strong Nowitzki wanted to escape this situation quickly.

The ex-NBA star now explains in an interview with journalist and NBA expert Rachel Nichols for the streaming series Headliners: “I was embarrassed. I just wanted to go somewhere where nobody knows me.” But the NBA bosses didn’t want that.

Those responsible called the German basketball star and asked him to stay where he was. Because: “There is a chance that you will get the MVP award,” Nowitzki recalls.

An absurdity for him. After the early exit, he didn’t want the trophy. Nowitzki: “Just give it to someone else,” he asked not to award the MVP trophy to him. And further: “Please not this year.” Yes!

In May he received the award. Joy? No! Nowitzki honestly: “It was one of the most uncomfortable moments of my career.” Even then he said: “It’s still very difficult to be happy. The season just ended badly. But it’s a recognition of my performances in the regular season. That’s why I can be proud.”

What is he thinking today? Nowitzki: “The trophy is fantastic, it was a great season with a great team.”

By the way: In the summer he will be inducted into the “Hall of Fame”. He is the first German basketball player to receive this honor. The ceremony takes place in August.
