Seven Feyenoord fans received community service of up to one hundred hours on Tuesday because of “disgusting” banners in the run-up to the lost Conference League final against AS Roma (1-0). The men are guilty, although a few blame it on drunkenness.
The banners were held up a year ago in the run-up to the match in the Albanian capital Tirana. There were coarse texts to read addressed to Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb and Paul van Dorst, the chairman of the LGBTI supporters association Roze Kameraden.
The Feyenoord hooligans also insulted Jewish people and the Hitler salute was given. Pictures of it appeared on social media.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the men acted in a group, the action was prepared and discussed with each other in advance. They were aware of displaying the banners, taking the picture and distributing it. The judge agreed.
‘Very stupid action’
A 24-year-old fan hid behind drunkenness. “I don’t remember much about it anymore. I had a lot to drink and I don’t normally drink.” A 25-year-old man from Schiedam was more guilty. “A very stupid action. I should not have done that. I can imagine that people were hurt.”
A number of suspects also said that they did not know beforehand what was on the banners. “I didn’t see what it said until the next day,” said a 36-year-old Feyenoord fan from Arnemuiden. “Yes, very stupid and stupid of course.”
The police judge calls this story “unbelievable”. “It is a staged action. Banners were held up and group photos were taken. The suspects had disguised themselves. Something was going to happen that was unacceptable and they knew it.”
