Blues defender takes a toll after Bernabeu loss

Jamie Carragher strongly criticized the attitude of a Chelsea defender, which partly caused the exclusion of Ben Chilwell!

Jamie Carragher is always outspoken when it comes to criticizing a Premier League defender. This time, it was the Spaniard Marc Cucurella who paid the price. According to the legend of Liverpool, the side is at fault for the exclusion of his teammate Ben Chilwell.

“When you play in Europe it feels like it’s different to the Premier League. Sometimes it’s slower – it almost feels like you’re watching a charity game! Look everyone, as everyone is slow” remarks relayed by the Daily mail.

If he understands that Cucurella cannot fight in terms of pure speed against an arrow like Rodrygo, he highlights the reaction time of the ex-seagull on the ball taken by the Brazilian.

“But look at Rodrygo’s body position compared to Cucurella’s. He’s already on his way, Cucurella still hasn’t changed position.
“You can’t defend like you want to. [contre des joueurs rapides]. We would like to be tight and aggressive, but we must not forget who we are playing against. Rodrygo is lightning fast, so don’t go all out. Cucurella doesn’t go all out, he gives himself a few yards, which is good, but his problem is that he doesn’t react!
When the ball goes and [Rodrygo] turns, Cucurella stays like that [immobile]. He didn’t change his pace and didn’t understand what’s going on in this game.”

Ben Chilwell is not beyond reproach!

The ex-England international also up one for Ben Chilwell, whose expulsion could have been largely avoided. According to him, he should have let Rodrygo go and challenge Kepa. Eccentric as he was, it would have been difficult for him to deceive the Spanish goalkeeper.

For me, Cucurella is at fault but this [l’expulsion] is even more so. The player should not be held back.
The reason you pay a goalie is to do their job and get you out of trouble defensively – that’s what they’re here for! Let him do his job! Suddenly, you find yourself at ten, he will miss the second leg, which is silly because it would have been difficult for Rodrygo to score from that side.

Chelsea are now back to the wall and must reverse the trend in a week at Stamford Bridge. Without Ben Chilwell and with a more permeable defense than ever, the task seems almost impossible!
