FC Bayern Munich regained the lead in the Bundesliga with a home win against Borussia Dortmund.

With the 4:2 (3:0) against BVB, Bayern are back at the top of the table with a two-point lead over Dortmund. The goals for Bayern were scored by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with an own goal (13th minute), Thomas Müller (18th/23rd) and Kingsley Coman. Emre Can (72′) and Donyell Malen (90′) scored for the guests.

It was Bayern’s first game under coach Thomas Tuchel. “We were very nervous at the beginning, I was very nervous. Maybe it passed from me”said Tuchel in the ARD interview, but also criticized: “It got better, but overall it was sloppy. We made too many mistakes. There’s still a lot of room for improvement.” The record champions parted ways with Julian Nagelsmann last weekend after a nine-point lead over BVB in November had turned into a one-point deficit by the end of March.

Kobel blunders, Bayern consistently follow suit

The game started catastrophically for Dortmund after what was actually a good initial phase, especially for goalkeeper Kobel. After a free kick from Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano, he stepped next to the ball from the Bayern half, which then rolled into the goal (13′). Because of a slight touch by Kobel, the goal was officially counted as an own goal. “I can’t be happy with the goal, of course”said Kobel. “It is clear that the game hurts a lot.”

Bayern, who were always superior, followed suit: Matthijs de Ligt extended a corner kick from Joshua Kimmich from the right to the left post, where Müller pushed the ball over the line with his thigh (18′). “We handled the pressure well”said Müller in the ARD. “Dortmund was good in the game for the first few minutes. The goalkeeping mistake gave us wings, so we flipped the switch.”

A little later, Leroy Sané shot from a distance, Kobel let the ball bounce off Müller’s feet, who scored to make it 3-0 (23rd) – Tuchel’s dream start to coaching at Bayern was perfect early on. More chances could have resulted in more goals, and the game was a show of power for Bayern over long stretches. “We are very disappointed, very angry”said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. “But then we will learn from it and do better in the next game.”

Bayern lose a bit of determination in the end

Bayern initially dominated the game after the break. Sané crossed from the right flat into the penalty area, Kingsley Coman executed with a tackle to make it 4-0 (51st). Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting scored with a side kick, but a narrow offside position spoke against the goal (59th).

Dortmund put pressure on too late: Serge Gnabry, who had just come on as a substitute, had fouled Jude Bellingham, and Dortmund’s Can safely converted the penalty due (72′). Bayern missed several good chances while Dortmund scored the second: Malen found a 90th-minute assist from Raphael Guerreiro. However, the goal did not change anything in the logical outcome of the game.
