We spoke to Karel Sabbe after his inhuman effort: “I hallucinated for twelve hours straight”

For the last twelve hours his brain had completely shut down and he heard and saw imaginary people along the course. Karel Sabbe didn’t even remember that he was taking part in a competition. However, the will of the ultra runner took over; making him the first Belgian and 18th participant ever to successfully complete the Barkley Marathons. “This is rightly called the toughest competition in the world, I have never gone that deep.”
