The flame hit the pan after eighty minutes, when an FC Groningen fan threatened to enter the field. He was stopped by several stewards. Then the unrest moved to a supporters section behind the goal. Groningen player Willems tried to calm down the fans, but was unsuccessful.
There was pulling and pushing and the defender even got a big blow from his own fan. Other Groningen players also reported to the supporters’ section to keep the situation under control.

FC Groningen has a disastrous day
When referee Serdar Gözübüyük stopped the match, Heerenveen was leading 0-2 thanks to goals from Sydney van Hooijdonk. FC Groningen could no longer change the position and is in great relegation distress.
The club had already had a chaotic day before the incident. Prior to the match, it was announced that current FC Emmen coach Dick Lukkien will act as Groningen coach after the season.
According to director Wouter Gudde, Groningen would report Lukkien’s transfer on Monday at Emmen’s request, but the news leaked out exactly after FC Emmen’s match (2-0 loss against Sparta on Saturday) and before FC Groningen’s game. A deliberate action by FC Emmen, according to Gudde, who called the club “unprofessional and unreliable”.
