Trayce Thompson – Wikipedia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Trayce Nikolas Thompson (born March 15, 1991) is an American baseball player who plays outfield for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB).

He is the younger brother of NBA champion Klay Thompson and basketball player Mychel Thompson, as well as the son of former basketball player Mychal Thompson.[1] His father’s Bahamian origins allowed him to take the field at the World Baseball Classic with the British national team.[2]

The beginnings[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

He attended Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. He initially signed up to play baseball at the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA), but was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the second round of the 2009 MLB draft in June 2009 and thus began his minors career instead of starting his college career.[3]

Chicago White Sox[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

After making his way through the minor leagues, Thompson was promoted to the Chicago White Sox roster on August 3, 2015. The following day, he made his MLB debut in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. On August 11, he hit his first MLB home run in a win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.[4]

Los Angeles Dodgers[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

At the end of the 2015 season on December 16, Thompson was traded (along with Micah Johnson and Frankie Montas) to the Los Angeles Dodgers as part of a three-team trade that sent Todd Frazier to the White Sox and José Peraza, Brandon Dixon and Scott Schebler to the Cincinnati Reds. In his first year with the Los Angeles-based team, he played 80 games, hitting .225 with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs. On July 16, he was placed on injured reserve for back pain, but tests later revealed back fractures,[5] which did not allow him to return to the field in the season. He only returned the following year, in which he played 95 games with the Oklahoma City Dodgers at the Triple-A level and just 27 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in MLB.

Oakland Athletics[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

On April 5, 2018, he was signed by the Oakland Athletics. However, his presence in the franchise was short-lived, as he only managed to play 3 MLB games before being traded.

Second parenthesis to the Chicago White Sox[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

On April 19, 2018, the Chicago White Sox acquired Thompson in exchange for cash for the Athletics. Fielding in 48 MLB games over the span of about two months, he batted .116 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI. On June 22, he was cut from the roster.

Minors and return to MLB with the Chicago Cubs[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

After playing in Triple-A in both 2018 and 2019 and sitting out the 2020 minor league lockout due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Thompson (who also started the 2021 Triple-A season) he was promoted by the Chicago Cubs on September 14, 2021, thus resuming play in MLB more than three years after his last game in the “big league”.[6] He had 7 hits in 28 innings over 15 games.

san diego padres[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

On March 13, 2022, Thompson signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres. In MLB, he played 6 games between late April and early May, with one hit in 16 innings.

Los Angeles Dodgers[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

On May 19, 2022, he signed another minor league contract, this time with the Detroit Tigers, but never played with them except at the Triple-A level with the affiliated team the Toledo Mud Hens. On June 20, the Tigers traded Thompson to the Los Angeles Dodgers for cash. Added to the active roster immediately, he remained there for the remainder of the season, during which he hit 13 home runs and 39 batted in at home, while batting average of .268 in 74 games. On January 13, 2023, he renewed his contract with the Dodgers for one year, at a salary of $1.45 million.[7]
