The Niners receive 3 third-round compensatory picks. Now do they get into the 2023 NFL Draft?

This Thursday, the NFL announced that 37 compensatory selections were assigned to league teams. The most benefited this year were the Niners, who have seven of this type, for various reasons.

In this article we will explain the reasons and the impact it will have on the San Francisco 49ers NFL Draft 2023. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Why were these compensatory selections given?

Four of San Francisco’s new picks were awarded by the NFL program to make up for players lost in Free Agency; that is, when a team loses more players than it signs in a single offseason, and the league sees them as suitable for this reward formula, then it gives them compensatory picks.

Only the Rams and 49ers earned four compensatory picks for lost free agents in the offseason.

The other three picks were awarded because of the league’s initiative to incentivize minority hiring; when one of them is hired for a higher-ranking position, be it executive or head coach, they are given this courtesy.

In this particular case, the NFL gave these picks for the following members of the organization who left in the last three years:

  • Robert Saleh (head coach de los Jets)
  • Martin Mayhew (Commanders GM)
  • Mike McDaniel (head coach de los Dolphins)
  • DeMeco Ryans (head coach de los Texans)
  • Ran Carthon (GM de los Titans)

Additionally, these three picks were exclusively from the third round. Other teams that received compensatory selections in this way were the Chiefs and Browns.

Niners 2023 NFL Draft Order

Knowing the fact that they received additional picks, the Niners have this many, distributed as follows:

  • Third round: Number 99, 101, 102 global.
  • Round five: Number 173 overall.
  • Round six: Number 216 overall.
  • Seventh round: Number 253, 255 overall.

Four of them were awarded for the loss of the following free agents:

  • DT D.J. Jones (Broncos)
  • DL Arden Key (Jaguars)
  • RB Raheem Mostert (Dolphins)
  • OL Laken Tomlinson (Jets)

This leaves the 49ers in excellent shape after several big trades in recent years. Despite the fact that they released relevant capital, they will continue to think about reinforcing themselves via Draft in a notable way.

Or should they choose to continue to seek out veteran talent via trade, they also have some succulent picks they can add in upcoming trades. Whichever way they go, these picks fall like may water for the franchise.

Of course, some candidates this year who could give more next year are QB Jimmy Garoppolo and OT Mike McGlinchey. And depending on how things go, they will be very high selections. And so, continue to strengthen the project of the head coach, Kyle Shanahan.

In your opinion, how will the 49ers’ NFL Draft change with these picks? You can leave us your comments below this article or through our social media posts.
