The Swiss duel in the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, California, turned in favor of Jil Teichmann (WTA 39) who beat Belinda Bencic (WTA 9) in three sets 3-6 6-3 6 -3, after two hours and 32 minutes of a somewhat disjointed match. It was only the third confrontation between the two players and the 25-year-old Bernese now leads 2-1 against the Saint-Galloise, who did not celebrate her 26th birthday on the court.

In the first set, Bencic took the service of the Bienne three times and dominated as soon as the exchanges lengthened. If she experienced a small drop in speed while leading 4-1, the Olympic champion was able to tighten her game to win this set in less than 40 minutes.

Teichmann made the difference

But Bencic can lose focus when things go wrong. Led 0-2 in the second set, she began to stammer her tennis. And Teichmann has taken his level of play up a notch. Returning to 3-3, the Saint-Galloise again lost her service twice, committing huge faults, thus leaving the Bienne to equalize with one set everywhere and, above all, regain confidence.

With that faith at the top, Teichmann found length and lines in the final set, suffocating Bencic who, for his part, couldn’t get out of the rut. But it is clearly the first that decided the fate of this part.

Perhaps a click for the 39th in the world who is struggling to line up the victories at the start of the year. In the next round, she will face the Chinese Shuai Zhang (WTA 27, 34 years old) or the Swedish Rebecca Peterson (WTA 103, 27 years old).
