An eager Standard had clearly understood the message and immediately flew at Westerlo’s throat. With Zinckernagel in particular as a pivot, the Rouches put together a few goal-ready chances, but either goalkeeper Gillekens was in the way, or the Liège visor was not properly adjusted. After more than twenty minutes of play, the rush seemed to subside a bit, but Standard did not loosen its grip. An impotent Westerlo couldn’t get out of the clutches and it was a matter of waiting for the opening goal. That came in minute 37, again after a beautifully played attack. Zinckernagel and Ohio – with a cunning heel – eventually found Dønnum as a finisher. The tough Norwegian was faster on the ball than goalkeeper Gillekens and finished in a controlled manner: 1-0. The somersault was given to the home supporters for free. Standard finally went into the break with a deserved lead.
After the break, an unrecognizable Westerlo made a deserving attempt to move the beacons, but unlike in recent weeks, the Ruffs hardly got a significant attack on their feet. Standard continued to rule in midfield and it was patiently waiting for the death knell. Gillekens first managed to fumble a solid header from Dussenne out of his goal, but two minutes later it was still a hit. Ohio with the cross and Balikwisha simple with the 2-0. The unfortunate red card for Bodart for handball was a small damper on the celebrations in stoppage time, but Sclessin enjoyed himself and can gradually start dreaming of more with this kind of football.
