Simon Mignolet (35) says goodbye as Red Devil: “Sometimes you have to make difficult choices” | Red Devils

After Eden Hazard and Toby Alderweireld, Simon Mignolet is now also closing the door at the Red Devils.

The Club Brugge goalkeeper got his first chance on March 25, 2011 from then national coach Georges Leekens. Belgium then won 0-2 in the European Championship qualifying match in Austria.

Big Si represented our country in total at 3 World Cups (2014, 2018 and 2022) and 2 European Championships (2016 and 2020). Always as a double of permanent number one Thibaut Courtois.

The news does not come as a complete surprise. During the podcast ‘Eleven Insiders’, Mignolet already indicated in February that he was considering a farewell. The goalkeeper then said that he would make his decision for March.

“Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions,” says the reserve goalkeeper in his farewell video. “Today I do.”

“I say goodbye to my country after 13 years. Proud, honored and grateful: three feelings describe this wonderful chapter in my career.”

“Teammates, staff and certainly the fans: thank you, everyone,” concludes the Golden Shoe.
