The early loss at the Miami Open against Cristian Garin did not prevent Sebastián Báez from climbing to become the best Argentine in the men’s ranking. The reason comes with the performance of his compatriot Francisco Cerúndolo in the same tournament. The Florida M1000 semifinalist last season was unable to repeat that round in this edition, saying goodbye in the quarterfinals against Karen Khachanov.

The 24-year-old tennis player had displaced Diego Schwartzman from that lot weeks ago with the quarterfinals he reached on the South American tour on brick dust (Córdoba and Buenos Aires). However, the defense of that memorable performance in the United States did not materialize and it will be the category 2000 who will take over from next week.

Making his debut as the top figure in South American tennis, he will defend the Estoril title at the start of the European tour on brick dust. A year ago, he defeated Frances Tiafoe at the conclusion of the tournament and lifted his first ATP-level cup. This year, after a period in which he did not find that state that led him to establish himself as Top 35, he erased doubts by enlarging the trophy case with the coronation in Córdoba.
