Rory McIlroy: “I’m all for rewarding good performance”

Asked to react after the announcement of a new competition format on the PGA Tour next year, Rory McIlroy was in favor of this development: “I am all for rewarding good performance. The opportunity (to play the elevated events) must present itself immediately, as is the case with Chris Kirk, who by winning the Honda Classic secured a place there. You play well for two or three weeks, you are in a designated event.

Then you know that if you keep playing well, you’ll stay there. With all of these designated events and this schedule, we’re selling a product to people. They want clarity on this product and knowing what they are buying is really important to them and to the PGA Tour. »

“We have always had no-cut events, with the four WGCs, the three FedEx Cup play-off tournaments, the CJ Cup and the Zozoadded McIlroy. The only reason non-cut events are a problem is because the LIV has arrived. So, will there be maybe a little more? Maybe. It is still to be determined, moreover, and it is obvious that the Majors and the Players will remain events with cut. This will not change.

(Uncut) stars stay for four days no matter what. You’re asking Mastercard or whoever to pay $20 million for a tournament, so in that case they want to see the stars play over the weekend. They want a guarantee. So if that’s what has to happen, then that’s what will happen. »
