Pitchers will be able to request their own pitches with PitchCom

For the start of the season, catchers won’t be the only ones calling for pitches using PitchCom technology, which debuted in Major League Baseball in 2022.

MLB informed all 30 teams that pitchers will also be able to pick their pitches with a PitchCom device, after successful preseason testing.

The new rule allows teams to have three PitchCom transmitters (for pitch requests) and 12 receivers (for listening only). At any time, two transmitters will be allowed on the field – one for the pitcher and one for the catcher – and up to five receivers for the defensive team.

Worn in the form of a wristband with buttons indicating different pitches and locations, PitchCom transmitters can be worn on a pitcher’s belt or on the back of his glove.

With MLB implementing the pitch timer, among other rules, in 2023, PitchCom broadcasters could benefit the pitcher to focus on selecting his pitches quickly and start making his moves to the mound on time.

“I throw a lot of pitches, but I can’t always throw the one I want if I don’t use that,” Zack Greinke said after his preseason debut on February 27. “I hope they allow it.”

Effectively, PitchCom transmitters for pitchers will be allowed in 2023, marking one more step to improve communication between catcher and pitcher using technology.
