Perez with Morikawa, Day and Svensson

The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play 2023 draw has delivered its verdict. The only Frenchman in the running in Austin (Texas), Victor Perez, semi-finalist in 2021, will have to get out of a group including Collin Morikawa (11th in the world), Jason Day (37th) and Adam Svensson (54th).

The writing of Golf Planet considered this Monday morning the possibilities of drawing lots for Victor Perez in this group stage of the Match Play World Championships. At the time of the verdict, the result is… mixed.

Victor Perez admittedly avoided the very beefy one in hat 1 (Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy). He inherits the American Collin Morikawaa two-time Major winner, but whose form is a bit uncertain in 2023.

The return of Jason Day…

On the other hand, in pot 2, the Australian Jason Day was clearly a player to avoid. Winner of this WGC-Match Play twice (in 2014 in the Arizona desert against Victor Dubuissonduring an unforgettable final, and in 2016), the former world No. 1 is playing well again at the start of the season with, already, four “top 10” on the PGA Tour.

As for the Canadian Adam Svensson, a newcomer to the event, he will necessarily be inexperienced. But the winner of the RSM Classic 2022 is one of the rising stars on the American circuit.

Note that the strongest group in this draw seems to be that made up of Jon Rahm, the world No. 2, Rickie Fowler, Billy Horschel (winner of the tournament in 2021) and Keith Mitchell.

Vers Scheffler in the quarter final?

Let’s be optimistic, if Victor Perez won his group, he would be opposed in the round of 16 to the winner of the group composed of Viktor Hovland, Chris Kirk, Si Woo Kim et matt kuchar. By projecting themselves a little further, the Tarbais could possibly challenge the world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, in the quarter-finals.

A place in the last four would certainly be synonymous with qualification for the Masters for the 61st player in the world. But the road to Magnolia Lane is strewn with pitfalls!
