New faces at Giraldilla Tournament › Sports › Granma

Three years have passed since the last time the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum was the scene of the Giraldilla International Badminton Tournament in Havana. The events associated with COVID-19 prevented the holding of this event, which now returns to the capital facility to develop its 21st edition.

The maximum event of this sport in Cuba will take place between March 16 and 19, and a participation close to or greater than 30 international badminton players from England, Bulgaria, Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador, the United States, Indonesia, Croatia, Peru, Jamaica, Canada and Israel.

Cuba will present a formation of 22 players between both sexes. Most of them making their debut in matches of this type, so their main objectives will be to get the most out of more experienced international opponents.

Among the women, the international Taymara Oropesa and Yeyli Ortiz will lead the Cuban “army”. For men, Roberto Carlos Herrera stands out. The best options to access medals will be in the women’s doubles specialty, as long as Oropesa and Ortiz form a pair.

The Giraldilla will deliver points for the world ranking of the specialty. In addition, it is the penultimate competition to qualify for the Santiago-2023 Pan American Games. The last instance to access the great multi-sports party in America will be the Continental Tournament of the specialty, scheduled to be held in Jamaica in the coming weeks.
