Asvel continues to sink in Euroleague against Zalgiris Kaunas

Asvel’s European hopes have been gone for many weeks and the Rhone club is no longer advancing in the Euroleague. The players of TJ Parker suffered a seventh consecutive defeat on the continental scene this Thursday evening on the floor of Zalgiris Kaunas (85-67).

Faced with a Lithuanian club which is fighting to secure its qualification in the play-offs, the Villeurbannais will only have held out for a quarter. Despite the returns of Charles Kahudi and Nando De Colo, preserved against Bayern on Tuesday, Asvel cracked after a good first ten minutes (22-16).

If Nando De Colo equaled the second best scorer in the history of the competition – Juan Carlos Navarro – early in the match (4,152 points), he then died, like his team. From the start of the second quarter, the Zalgiris came back in front in just one minute and continued their momentum to reach the locker room with a ten-point lead (47-37). The Lithuanians then widened the gap after the break, led by Isaiah Taylor (15 points) and Ignas Brazdeikis.

Spanoulis goal for De Colo

Three minutes from the final buzzer, Nando De Colo scored his first basket in the second half to pass Navarro in the books and look towards Greek Vassilis Spanoulis’ 4,455 points. But the scoreboard showed 77-62 in favor of the hosts, who prevailed 85-67 at the Zalgirio Arena. Kaunas thus passes in front of Maccabi Tel Aviv and seizes the eighth and last qualifying place for the play-offs before the match of the Israelis against Anadolu Efes, Friday. Asvel remains penultimate with a record of 8 wins for 20 defeats.
