Ndour, Rodríguez and Aguilar, graced with the Jesús Telo

The jury of the 63rd edition of the Jesús Telo Awards has chosen yesterday the best athletes from Gran Canaria, among which is the player of basket trained at the Spar Gran Canaria, Astou Ndour, as the best female athlete; sailor Joel Rodríguez, best male athlete and sprinter Selena Aguilar, best athlete with a disability.

The jury was chaired by the Councilor for Sports of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Francisco Castellano, who was accompanied by representatives of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Government of the Canary Islands, the town halls, representatives of the Jesús Telo Sports Center, founder of the prizes and athletes of recognized prestige, as well as the media.

As for the rest of the winners of the Jesús Telo, the jury appointed the Boat of lateen sail Hospital La Paloma Pueblo Guanche, as the best representative of the autochthonous sport and the rock as the best sports promotion. Lastly, the Honor Award for an entire sports career went to former international handball player Daniel Sarmiento.

Prizes will be awarded during the fifth European Island of Sport Gala, which will be held on March 26, starting at 6:00 p.m., at the Pérez Galdós Theater.

In the case of Astou Ndour, the trajectory of a player who, although born in Senegal, is from Gran Canaria by adoption and a world reference who has an enviable track record in which a WNBA ring, an Endesa Women’s League, stands out, is recognized. a Turkish Cup, a Gold and a bronze in the European Championship, an Olympic silver and a bronze in the World Championship.

For his part, the very young Olympic sailor Joel Rodríguez, from RC Naútico de Gran Canaria, is one of the benchmarks of the ILCA7 Sailing, in which he has been European and World champion in the under 20 category, while Selena Aguilar achieved last year the bronze in the European Athletics Championships for people with intellectual disabilities in Krakow (Romania).

Last season, Rocasa managed to add its third continental gimp to its showcases, while Pueblo Guanche won the Federation Trophy and the Eliminatory Tournament. Finally, homage is paid to the best Canarian handball player in history, Daniel Sarmiento, in his retirement.
