Miami Open 2023 recognizes Monica Puig

The tournament organizers Miami Open 2023 recognized yesterday, Friday, the career of the Puerto Rican Monica Puig Marchanwho retired as a professional tennis player in 2022.

The organization shared on its social networks images of the recognition of the Puerto Rican. The honor was not only for her contributions to the sport, but also for the contributions she made in the communities.

“We honor a legend tonight at @HardRockStadium. Congratulations to the Olympic gold medalist @MonicaAce93 for an incredible career”, read the message on the official account of the tournament on Twitter.

Puig enjoyed great popularity in Miami as a tour player for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA, for its acronym in English).

In 2016, the young woman won the gold medal in women’s singles during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was the first athlete to achieve such a feat representing Puerto Rico.

Puig returned to the Madrid Open after a two-year hiatus due to multiple injuries. However, she lost in the first round to Danielle Collins in straight sets. In June 2022 she announced her formal retirement and now she is focused on her training to participate in the Boston and London marathons in 2023. She will then compete in a triathlon in Augusta, Georgia.
