The 66-year-old former tennis player of Czech origin and nationalized American said that the disease she was diagnosed with last year is in “remission.”
The tennis player of Czech origin and nationalized American Martina Navratilova, 9 times Wimbledon champion, announced today that the throat and breast cancer that she had been diagnosed with late last year is “in a remission stage” after successful medical treatment.
“From what is known, it could be said that I am clean of cancer”revealed the 66-year-old former great champion in an interview she gave to the British outlet Talk TV and which was reproduced by the Spanish sports newspapers Marca and AS.
Navratilova, a tennis legend with 18 Grand Slam titles that elevated her to number one in the world, and with a total collection of 167 titles on the WTA circuit, she underwent intense treatment for a cancer that she had been diagnosed with in 2010 but which reappeared with force at the end of 2022.
“When the doctors told me, I was in total panic for three days thinking that I might not see next Christmas.. The wish list of all the things I wanted to do if I only had one year to live came to my mind,” Navratilova admitted.
The former tennis player underwent radiation treatment every day for a period of three weeks and three weekly rounds of chemotherapy.
“It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life”concluded Navratilova.
