Indian Wells. Teichmann wins Swiss duel against Bencic.

Jil Teichmann manages to free himself from Belinda Bencic at the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells. She beat the number 9 seeded Eastern Switzerland on her 26th birthday 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 3.

Teichmann, who, unlike Bencic, did not enjoy a bye in the first round, benefited after two and a half hours from Bencic’s backhand error on the third match point. It was her second victory in the third direct duel with the Fed Cup teammate, who was four months older and 30 places ahead of her in the world rankings. The next opponent in the round of 16 is either the Chinese Zhang Shuai (WTA 27) or the Swede Rebecca Peterson (WTA 103).

Teichmann earned the success against Bencic, with whom she played doubles before the match and advanced to the next round in three sets against Daria Kassatkina and Martina Trevisan, with her tenacity. When Bencic put her on the defensive in the first set, she was able to free herself and use her greater reserves of strength in the decisive round.

In terms of the course of the season, the success against the top 10 player Bencic is tantamount to a liberating blow. In Dubai Teichmann was eliminated in the first round against Lauren Davis and in Doha in the qualification against Gabriela Ruse. For Bencic it was only the fourth defeat in the 19th game on the WTA tour this year.
