Ice hockey – Nine departures in polar bears – Sport

The Eisbären Berlin have announced the first squad decisions for the coming season eleven days after their premature end of the season in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). According to this, at least nine professionals are leaving the record champions, who missed the playoffs as defending champions. The departures of the two goalkeepers Tobias Ancicka and Juho Markkanen as well as the attackers Giovanni Fiore, Frank Mauer, Bennet Roßmy, Peter Regin, Marco Baßler, Jan Nijenhuis and Lewis Zerter-Gossage are certain. The two young professionals Ancicka and Roßmy have decided to leave the club and accept offers from other clubs, explained sporting director Stéphane Richer. The remaining seven players would not have received new contracts. According to Richer, negotiations are still ongoing with Manuel Wiederer and Yannick Veilleux. The future of captain Frank Hördler is also still open. Those responsible are in talks with the 38-year-old defender, but in view of his services to the club, Hördler “deserves to be given more time and to talk to him differently than to other players,” said managing director Thomas Bothstede. Sports director Richer did not want to comment on possible additions. However, the Canadian has already set the basic goal for the coming season: “We have to be quicker and score more goals.”
