Hugo Broos helps South Africa to Africa Cup: “Not past the group stage? Then they can kill me” | Africa Cup

If South Africa could not qualify for the Africa Cup, they could “kill him”, Hugo Broos had suggested before the qualifications.

The 2-2 draw against Liberia in the preliminary rounds So last week was a big disappointment. Broos immediately went to the changing rooms and shunned the press.

But a week later, the qualification for the Africa Cup is finally in, although South Africa was only able to hold on to a 2-1 lead in the final minutes against Liberia.

Broos breathed a sigh of relief. “Normally, this country should be at every edition of the Africa Cup. I therefore did not understand why it failed in recent years.”

“This victory is therefore very important for us, because we have a team with young players. We want to make as much progress as possible in the next 10 months.”

That will have to be, because Broos will also make a bold statement for the group stage of the Africa Cup in January 2024. “I said they could kill me if we didn’t make it to the Africa Cup. Now they should kill me if we don’t get past the group stage,” he said.
