EUROPE LEAGUE. Leandro Trossard and Arsenal go out on penalties, Manchester United and Feyenoord push through

Arsenal – Sporting 1-1

No Leandro Trossard in the base at Arsenal, Gabriel Jesus was allowed to make his comeback in the striker against Sporting after his knee injury. After the 1-1 in Lisbon, everything was still to be decided in London, so Arsenal took control and took the lead through Granit Xhaka. But Sporting straightened up after the break: Arsenal stupidly gave the ball away in midfield, Goncalves saw Ramsdale far from his goal and kicked the ball over the goalie. The Gunners saw off almost the entire second half with the Portuguese, but it remained 1-1. Extra time would decide who pushes through. Arsenal was the boss in that, but a goal was no longer scored. Penalty kicks determined the fate of both teams. And that was also very exciting. The first three went in on both sides and Sporting also converted their fourth. Then Gabriel Martinelli came, the Brazilian missed and so the Portuguese had an excellent opportunity to push through. Nuno Santos did not hesitate and kicked Sporting to the quarter-finals, the European adventure is over for the Premier League leader.

Real Sociedad – AS Roma 0-0

The assignment for Sociedad was clear: after the 2-0 defeat in Rome, the Spaniards had to score at least twice at home. The home team dominated the first half with no less than 75% possession of the ball, but no great opportunities were forthcoming. It was even on the other side that Sociedad seemed to get a cold shower just before half-time, but Smalling’s goal was rejected. Fifteen minutes before the end, Sociedad succeeded, but their goal was also rejected. It remained 0-0 and Roma pushed through thanks to their home win from the first leg.

Ferencvaros – Bayer Leverkusen 0-1

After the 2-0 in Leverkusen, the Hungarians could no longer hope for a remonte and after just three minutes of play that glimmer of hope had completely disappeared when Diaby scored the 0-1. Deep in the second half, Leverkusen finally knocked his Hungarian opponent against the canvas after a goal from Adli, on the instructions of – man of the match – Diaby. Leverkusen easily pushes through to the quarterfinals.

Fenerbahce – Sevilla 1-0

Bad news for Red Devil Michy Batshuayi. He was soon forced off the field against Sevilla after sustaining an injury without contact with an opponent. Never a good sign, besides, Batsman left the field on a stretcher in tears. His team then won 1-0, thanks to a penalty goal from Enner Valencia, but that was not enough to advance to the quarterfinals. It is Sevilla that goes into the draw for the draw on Friday, thanks to the 2-0 home win in the first leg.

Real Betis – Manchester United 0-1

Who else but Marcus Rashford finished it off against Real Betis for Manchester United. The English club had beaten Betis 4-1 in the first leg and therefore had a large bonus. That was never in danger at any time and in the second half Rashford even finished it off by shooting the 0-1. His sixth goal in the Europa League already this season. With that he became top scorer in this Europa League.

Feyenoord-Shakhtar 7-1

One half was enough for Feyenoord to qualify for the quarter-finals, winning 7-0 against Shakhtar Donetsk. After the 1-1 in Ukraine, a dominant Feyenoord finished it in-house. Giménez shot the 1-0 against the ropes early on, captain Kökcu doubled Rotterdam’s lead halfway through the first half and a little later the same Kökcu put the 3-0 on the board from the spot. After the break, Idrissi made it 4-0, to put the forfait figures on the board with a wonderful place ball. But it wasn’t over yet, Jahanbakhsh took care of the 6-0, immediately afterwards substitute Danilo took care of the humiliating 7-1 final score. In the end, Shakhtar made another honor saver, but after an invisible match it had to drip. Feyenoord convincingly advance to the quarter-finals. The Dutch can confidently go to the Classic against Ajax on Sunday.

Freiburg – Juventus 0-2

For Juventus it was a must in Freiburg. The Old Lady is only seventh in Serie A and therefore better win the Europa League to get a Champions League ticket. After the narrow 1-0 from the first leg, Juve could not rest on its laurels in Germany. The Italians had a hard time against the Freiburg in the first half, but were awarded a penalty after hands from Gulde just before half-time. He got his second yellow and was allowed to take a shower, Vlahovic put Juventus on roses via the penalty kick. After the break, Juventus never got into trouble again against the ten-man Freiburg and even made it 0-2 via Chiesa. This way the Italians assure themselves of a place in the quarterfinals.
