Puerto Rican star reliever Edwin “Sugar” Diaz He published today on his social networks that the operation he underwent to repair a tear in his right knee was successful.
In what were his first statements after the serious injury suffered on Wednesday, Díaz also thanked the Puerto Rican fans for their support and asked that the euphoria continue with the Puerto Rican team in the World Baseball Classic.
Díaz suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee while celebrating Puerto Rico’s victory over the Dominican Republic, 5-2, on Wednesday in Miami on Wednesday to secure a spot in the Clásico quarterfinals. The New York Mets reliever underwent surgery Wednesday at a hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida.

“Puerto Rico, I’m fine!! My family and I are more than grateful for all the support we have received from you through your messages and prayers. The operation was successful thank God and we hope that the recovery will be the same. Keep supporting our Team Rubio, don’t quit!! PR thanks! ”, Díaz wrote on his Instagram account, along with a photo of him after giving the last out against the Dominicans.
Diaz is expected to miss the entire 2023 Major League Baseball season while he completes his rehabilitation process.
On the other hand, the Mets also reported that the operation was successful and that the rehabilitation process will begin next week.
Díaz was replaced in the Puerto Rican roster by Alex Claudio, also a reliever.
Puerto Rico will play its quarterfinal match against Mexico tomorrow, Friday, at 7:00 p.m. The winner will face Japan in the semifinal.
