Edin Terzic on derby frustration and Guerreiro role

After the recent setback in the Revierderby, Borussia Dortmund has to play against 1. FC Köln next Saturday evening. As BVB trainer Edin Terzic explained at a press conference, his team can fall back on their recently injured captain.

In the important Bundesliga game in front of a home crowd, BVB’s personnel worries eased somewhat. “We have to wait for the next two days. Emre Can is definitely not available to us because of his fifth yellow card. Marco Reus will be back in the squad. We still have to look at Gregor Kobel, he still had a cold at the beginning of the week. Otherwise it stays everything the same,” said Terzic, who considers Brandt’s use unlikely.

Meanwhile, Raphael Guerreiro with his convincing performance in the Revierderby has recommended himself for a renewed starting XI. It is possible that he will appear again in central midfield. “We always knew that he had the talent to find the right solutions. We are eternally grateful that we have someone like him. It was very intense for him against Schalke. He played a really good game. That’s why we want each other keep this option open in the future,” says Terzic about the BVB professional, whose contract expires in the summer.

However, Terzic did not provide any information as to whether Dortmund is now considering extending the working paper.

But the frustration over the draw at Schalke was still noticeable in the 40-year-old at the press conference. “We were open and honest with each other. We weren’t happy in the second half. That was disappointing. We were tough on ourselves on Sunday. We have to learn from the first goal we conceded and also stop a counterattack once in a while,” he clarified .

The most important statements at a glance:

+++ Terzic on the German performance in the Champions League +++

“It can go that fast. 14 days ago I was asked whether it was possible for all four German teams to reach the quarter-finals. Now it’s just Bayern Munich. But actually all German teams are also in the Europa League and Conference League did a good job. It was often a close affair. I think we’re on the right track. I also find this discussion a bit hypocritical. We know it will be difficult for us against teams like Chelsea. We want each other stabilize and fight for every lap. But it doesn’t get any easier when we see what our opponents can spend. We’re still on the right track I think.”

+++ Terzic over flanks +++

“That was already an issue in the summer. That’s why we signed Haller and Modeste. We wanted to tackle that, even in winter. It’s about occupying the penalty area. It’s all about the right timing, the right pace. This remains an important issue. If we play the wingers in the center to overload that, the wingers are missing. These are topics that we always include in training. The boys should be safe there. We can improve there. But we scored over 2.5 goals on average. We just have to learn that that has to be enough to win the game.”

+++ Terzic about Bynoe-Gittens +++

“We were often able to turn games over the substitutes. That was also due to the guys who played before. Jamie had good moments in all games. Unfortunately, he missed the chance to make it 3-1 in the derby. We still have it most teen goals. We know what potential he has.”

+++ Terzic on the Can replacement +++

“Özcan is of course an alternative. But of course we still have Dahoud up our sleeves. Özcan would play against his former club, that’s certainly special for him. But it doesn’t mean that only one of the two will play. We’ll let each other all possibilities are open.”

+++ Terzic about Guerreiro +++

“We always knew that he had the talent to find the right solutions. We are eternally grateful that we have someone like him. It was very intense for him against Schalke. He played a really good game. That’s why we want each other keep this possibility open in the future.”

+++ Terzic on the reaction of the team after the derby +++

“I think you could tell that the disappointment was very big. We had a great chance of getting the next win there. However, you can’t badmouth everything. It was an extremely important week. To be honest, it was perhaps even somewhat undeserved that we we were able to win here against Leipzig. It was unfortunate at Schalke that we didn’t win. That balances it out. You could tell in training that the lads want to do better.”

+++ Terzic on the speech to the team +++

“Basically, I’m very communicative and I’m looking for an exchange with the players. First we look at the scenes with the players in the office and then put them together in the analysis to implement it more successfully.”

+++ Terzic on the games against Chelsea and Schalke +++

“We were open and honest with each other. We deserved to lose the game in London. We weren’t the better team in either game. We didn’t deserve to go through. We played really well against Schalke, especially in the first half. It looked really, really good. We weren’t satisfied in the second half. That was disappointing. We were hard on ourselves on Sunday.

+++ Terzic about Haller +++

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed for him with the national team. I’ve heard what the media has written about him this week. I won’t forget that it’s the best story that he’s fit again. We know it’s an extraordinary one is the path he has taken and we will continue to support him in this.”

+++ Terzic about 1. FC Köln +++

“There are always phases during a season. I like to remember the game against Bremen, where they scored seven goals. We’ve been warned, also because of the home game. They’re extremely dangerous. We have a lot of respect. We’re sure that we have to show an intense game.”

+++ Terzic about Julian Brandt +++

“He’s in rehab and he’s improving every day. He hasn’t even trained with the team. We think it’s going to be very close going into Saturday.”

+++ Terzic about the staff +++

“We have to wait for the next two days. Emre Can is definitely not available to us because of his 5th yellow card. Marco Reus will be back in the squad. We still have to look at Gregor Kobel, he still had a cold at the beginning of the week. Otherwise everything stays the same.”

The head coach has entered the stage and greets the journalists present. Now it can start!

+++ It’s about to start +++

BVB coach Edin Terzic is expected in the Borussia Dortmund press center in a few minutes.

+++ BVB now (again) behind in the title fight +++

After a furious start to the year, Borussia Dortmund was head-to-head for several matchdays and tied at the top of the table with FC Bayern. But after the unplanned loss of points in the derby at FC Schalke 04 (2-2) at the weekend, BVB is now two points behind. Against the currently struggling 1. FC Köln it shouldn’t be any easier for the black and yellow on Saturday evening (6:30 p.m.) than against the self-sacrificing Schalke.

Although the gap between Cologne and the relegation rank is already seven points, the club from the cathedral city is far from saved. So BVB can expect a hot duel in the Signal Iduna Park at home.

How will Edin Terzic adjust his men to Steffen Baumgart’s team? How does the BVB coach want to avoid losing the next scheduled points?

+++ What is the personnel situation at BVB? +++

Which stars can Edin Terzic count on against 1. FC Köln? BVB shooting star Jude Bellingham seemed a little tired recently. There were also rumors that his knee could be a reason for the young Englishman’s problems. Can Terzic clear up the speculation?

In the last game against Schalke 04, Julian Brandt, the black and yellow attacker who was in the best form recently, was injured. How does the head coach want to replace the German international?

+++ Locks threaten BVB +++

Three players could be missing for at least one game in the coming weeks. Because the two defenders Mats Hummels as well as winter newcomer Julian Ryerson and attacker Anthony Modeste have already seen four yellow cards.
