Eddy Merckx estimates the chances for the Tour of Flanders: “I liked them better on the climbs”

Sunday is the Tour of Flanders. Eddy Merckx tried to estimate all the chances.

In the E3 Saxo Classic there was a trio that pulled away 40km from the finish. Wout Van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel and Tadej Pogacar battled for victory and Van Aert eventually made it.

For Eddy Merckx, that trio is one of the top favorites in the Tour of Flanders. Which of the 3 he puts on top is more difficult.

“In E3 I didn’t think Van Aert was top,” Merckx said Sporza. “He won because he was able to recover in the last kilometers. Pogacar and van der Poel made the most impression on the climbs.” Merckx won the Tour of Flanders himself in 1969 and 1975.
